The Importance of Investing in our Families

January 15, 2019

The overwhelming reality of parenting and the seemingly unbearable challenges that can sometimes accompany those homes became abundantly clear to me while helping my wife coach soccer a few years back. Seeing 5 & 6-year-old boys and girls being flagrantly disrespectful to their mothers breaks my heart not only for their parents, but for their future spouses as well.

We often look at these interactions from afar and introspectively armchair quarterback our “enlightened” perspectives that would “immediately” alleviate such heinous scenarios. In reality, our five seconds into the lives of these people give us no clue as to what is really going on. We won’t have the remotest relevance if that is our best assessment. Here is the one-word reason why: “investment.”

If you have been in the body of Christ for any length of time, you are aware of the emphasis that’s being put on retaining our young people. The percentages of those that remain faithful once they leave the home goes down drastically. Even more so if either of the parents isn’t present. But it is this writer’s belief that those depressing percentages are real only because the entire body of Christ has not actively invested their time and strengths into those precious souls.

We should all give thought to what Jesus says in Mark 9:42:

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.”

Take the initiative today to encourage parents and offer a hand in any way you can.  Make the investment that will pay eternal dividends. May you be the blessing to the church to the generation to come, as well as to eternity to come.
