Purpose

To instruct the audience on the importance of wisdom – dealing with a number of problems in their attitude, something that a new way of thinking directly addresses!

 

Purpose passage: James 3:13-18 – “Proverbs of the NT”

 

About the Audience

A new religion (probably written around 44-47 A.D.)

They are going through a rough time (“Dispersion” 1:1) – Acts 8

“Twelve tribes” (1:1) – primarily a Jewish audience, not the only clues that lead us there

Jewish illustrations - Abraham (2:21); Rahab (2:25); Job (5:11); The Prophets (5:10); Elijah (5:17)

Jewish words

“Assembly” (2:2) is the word for synagogue as opposed to the word for “called out”

“Lord of Hosts” (5:4)
